On the sheltered and sunny terrace of a picturesque side valley in the Upper Engadine lies Pontresina. For mountaineers and hikers, the original Engadine village is a true paradise, as it is the starting point of many delightful climbing tours and alpine hikes. Finally, the Piz Bernina, with an altitude of 4,049 meters, the only four-thousander of the Eastern Alps and other snow-capped peaks wait for their conquerors. If you dare to visit the mountain inn of the Diavolezza, the “beautiful devil” (2,978 meters), by foot or with the Diavolezza train – relax in the highest whirlpool in Europe and enjoy the high alpine glacier world and a dream panorama. A hike to the Pers glacier offers a sweet rest. Mountaineering beginners who are not yet confident in this difficult “chunk” can first complete a course in Pontresina in the largest mountaineering school in Switzerland. The right technique can be practiced via ferrata Piz Trovat, which is only 20 minutes away from the mountain station Diavolezza, or in the climbing garden Morteratsch. An easier hike leads from Pontresina to the beautiful Val Roseg with its species-rich world of flora and fauna as well as the picturesque Lej da Vadret (glacier lake).
